Micro Rainbow

Stephanie Schober has been working with Micro Rainbow's group of LGBTQI+ refugees and asylum seekers since 2016. She is part of an artist collective who devise and co-lead  dance workshops and creative projects as part of the charity's social inclusion activities in London, Birmingham and Wales under the project title Body and Movement.

Funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation between 2021 - 2025, activities in London have included residencies at Toynbee Studios, The Showroom in Westminster, Walthamstow Wetlands, Shoreditch Town Hall, Queer Circle and at the Tate Modern, and have been documented in two films by Sam Williams.

Projects in 2026 include a community co-creation commission from The Place involving London Contemporary Dance School students and a residency at The Welcome Trust.

Dance Your Freedom

This touring exhibition was first presented in June 2024 at the Royal Society of Arts in London, the Norwegian Church Arts Centre in Cardiff and Stryx Gallery in Birmingham. Using the power of dance to create community, Body and Movement offers a safe space for LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers to connect with others in joyful, supportive ways. The Dance Your Freedom exhibition showcases the creativity that emerges from that community as well as the testimonies of its members as they dance their own emotional healing in new lands. Following a path through live performance, graphic artworks, costumes, dance films, audio works and photography, the visitor to the exhibition can witness powerful stories from LGBTQI refugees and asylum seekers as they redevelop a positive relationship with their bodies and themselves.

Curated by Leo Menezes and produced by Louisa Borg-Costanzi Potts, contributing dance artists include
Fearghus Ó Conchúir, Osian Meilir Ioan, Devon Nelson, Gerrard Martin, Poppy Norwood, Jerry Lee Dawson, Oluwaseun Olayiwola, Johnny Autin, Shivaangee Agrawal, Kate Taylor, Takeshi Matsumoto, Angela Dennis and Stephanie Schober. With film by Sam Williams, photography by Kate Green, sound design by Heidi Chiu, graphic design by Kevin Lloyd and text by beneficiaries collated by evaluator Kate Wakeling.
