Extracts from 'so schön' (so beautiful) - June 1982
'und als der prinz mit dem kutscher tanzte, waren sie so schön, dass der ganze hof in ohnmacht fiel' (when the prince danced with the coachman they were so beautiful that the whole court swooned) 'das abwaschwasser wird kalt, ruft franz, und im übringen bin ich eifersüchtig auf alles was paul nicht mit mir macht!' (the dish washing water is getting cold, shouts franz, and by the way i am jealous of everything that paul doesn't do with me!) (the pub is illuminated brightly and has a large front window. the other day helmut pointed out to franz that people are always standing in front of the glass and first peer in to see who is inside. sometimes they then don't even need to go in. tonio walks to the counter and orders something, hopefully the right thing. they are all sitting here on small and very very uncomfortable wooden chairs, that don't fit in at all with the bright light and the people's guise. but because they are so small it goes unnoticed though. the walls are covered with scribbles, the toilets are painted black. the people have style, the people are not seeing us. the people are looking past everything. the service look as if they are not really here. occasionally the service drops a coffee over someone's trousers. the service not only serves reluctantly, it also looks like it. the service is a character role. come on, says franz to tonio, and grabs his right thigh, let me sit on your lap. tonio moves his head back, half closes his eyes and says without moving his mouth: you bonkers ee?) (sabine has both elbows on the table. one arm up, the one with the cigarette. one hand is playing with something. sabine is looking at her bracelets that she made herself with lots of beads. she is looking for something in her handbag or menu. lydia and michael also sit at the table. lydia and michael don't say anything. they are at the end of their twenties, working, relaxed. maybe they just don't have enough energy to have any problems. but enough of that. lydia and michael are leaning backwards. Bruno is not leaning on anything. he is sitting quite straight, doesn't smoke, looks younger than he is. once during the holidays he stopped shaving but that didn't help. actually bruno should be a bit wiry, but that would be too exhausting. he doesn't need it. he is the gentle variation of being wiry.) Extracts from 'die heftige variante des lockerseins' (the fierce way of being casual) 'keinen kaffee will ich dich trinken lassen der dir nicht überschwappt weil ich mich auf deinen knien räkele. keinen ton sollst du mehr rauskriegen: wie im schlaraffenland steckt sich immer was in deinen mund baby. ich wünsche mir ein leben in der besenkammer mit dir: wo du nicht weglaufen kannst' (i won't let you drink no coffee that doesn't spill from your cup because i am lolling on your knees. no sound shall get out of you: in the land of milk and honey something is always put into your mouth baby. i wish for a life with you in the broom closet: where you can't run away from) Quotes can be found in this must recent publication: Schernikau, R M (2019) Legende. Edited by Mileke, L, Thein, H and Keck, T. Verbrecher Verlag: Germany Tuntenmuseum Berlin 'Dabei kommt es wie vor 30 Jahren nicht darauf an, ob eine Show gut ist - sondern ob der Trash von Herzen kommt und mit Energie ausgestattet ist.' (BeV Stroganov) (Like 30 years ago, it doesn't matter if a performance is good - but if the trash comes from the heart and is equipped with energy) So much to learn from this amazing archives created by BeV Stroganov documenting rare footage of the 1980s and 1990s queer performance scene in Berlin. I love this broadcast featuring an interview with Schernikau. So Pretty I recently saw and fell in love with this quiet film by Jessie Jeffrey Dunn Rovinelli in which she reimagined Schernikau's novel so schön for an intimate setting of a group of trans friends in New York in 2019. |
